Stolen car tracking solutions can now finally be deployed in low cost vehicles

In the automotive sector there is a long history of M2M, mainly in the vehicle tracking and fleet management segments, which provides a large number of opportunities for replacing existing GSM or satellite solutions to reduce power consumption and costs. The automotive sector represents one of the greatest opportunities for machine-to-machine with a dedicated IoT focus on vehicle management and safety. From less than 90 million connections globally in 2011 the automotive M2M market will grow to almost 1.3 billion connections by the end of 2020. Of these, one billion will be application-specific ‘aftermarket’ devices, well over 300 million will be vehicle platforms supporting multiple applications. There are numerous vehicle-related applications that would benefit from being connected. Today the market is dominated by security and tracking applications, particularly in markets such as Brazil and South Africa where car theft is high. By 2020 the emergency assistance device will be the dominant type of connection on the back of regulatory mandates such as eCall in Europe, creating many after market opportunities.

Multimedia has entered the market in high-end vehicles but this trend will change, extending the scope to all segments. Vehicles are equipped with dozens of computers that could benefit from being independently connected to the SIGFOX network to transmit their status directly to the manufacturers. This information would help manufacturers in developing new services or making their products more reliable. For all vehicle accessories (such as tires, gasoline or brake pads), SIGFOX offers an important opportunity to create a direct interface between accessory manufacturers and customers.

In the coming years, the eCall will be a strongly developed feature. The SIGFOX network could enhance reliability of this new security feature, not only as the back-up for a GSM-based system (in case of network failure) but also for providing autonomous devices to be integrated in older vehicles.
