Intelligent buildings

"The intelligent buildings sector will be mainly driven by security followed by the demand for energy efficiency "

Intelligent Buildings is the second largest sector for M2M revenue, second only to Consumer Electronics, according to market research firms. Faced with rising energy costs, there is a huge incentive for commercial building owners and homeowners to increase efficiencies and reduce energy spend.

Monitoring systems in intelligent buildings and the occupant’s behavior continuously in real time will allow applications for building owners and occupants to anticipate and address potential problems or incidents. Sensors combined with analytics software that makes sense of disparate data points will help facility managers and home owners become far more proactive about managing buildings and the home environment at peak efficiency.

Buildings in most countries consume around 40% of total energy. Moreover, some reports suggest that up to 50% of this energy is wasted. It is evident therefore that there is a huge incentive for commercial building owners and facility managers to increase efficiencies and reduce energy spend. Likewise, in the face of rising energy costs, home owners are pursuing the same goals. In order to achieve these objectives, households, commercial and public sector building owners will deploy M2M-based solutions to achieve higher levels of monitoring, control and automation of core building systems. These systems include heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) and lighting as well as security systems.
